New Trend: Travel and Click

(picture taken of fresh figs at a Cortona Grocer, Tuscany)

OK, so it may not be on the "actual" new trend list of any magazine or style watch, but it should be!  Travel, take your camera, and click everything you see.  THEN, turn your travel catalogue into beautiful artwork for your home!

My husband and I (well I decided and my husband was wonderful enough to carry most of the brunt of the work without a single complaint) "refreshed" our main floor powder room this past weekend.  A Spanish Tile Red painted cubicle with standard white pedestal sink, toilet and tiles has been transformed with a decadent and whimsical red and black floral wallpaper, some new hardware and a collection of pictures I took while travelling through southern Tuscany this past June.  A new look achieved while not breaking the bank or having to undergo major renovations - bonus!

After finally organizing the snaps on a disc (Thanks, David!) I simply headed off to the local Shoppers Drug Mart and made myself comfortable at the self-serve print shop.  Here you can manipulate your prints from colour to sepia or black and white, crop, remove red eye - the works.  I found a few prints I really liked and they just popped in black and white!  So, for under $5, I have four 8x10 prints ready to frame!

My trek then took me to Micheal's craft store where I quickly found the wide black frames with double soft white moldings that completed my new artwork - and with a bit of Irish luck (or due to the continuing recession) they were all 50% off.  It's a sign.

The only thing missing from  the makeover is the originally planned black chandelier!

(In Black, of course!)

It was time to start making our home a bit more personal, and fun!  However, when I noticed there was NO overhead light in the powder room, the chandelier went PUFF out the door!

Here is the final (as of last night) product of our fall makeover!

Everyone in the family is happy, still talking and because of our new wallet-friendly artwork, we have enough left to start the next bathroom!  Stay tuned!

What do you get the man who has everything?

This is a question my husband uses to poke fun at himself - he then answers "penicillin."  Now, if you are a scientist, this will be extremely funny.  If not, take it for what it is and.... move on.  And on is where I moved last week.  Abandoning the traditional guides for gifts to celebrate our second anniversary, I opted to buy him something near and dear to his heart - alcohol.

To be fair, my husband is English.  That speaks volumes.  However, over the past few years (and I think with my influence), my husband has taken a liking to wine.  More specifically, appreciating and collecting it.  We currently have about 200 bottles in our make shift cellar in the basement, and with the anniversary approaching, I went to my trusted computer and started googling my way to a brilliant idea.  I found Vintage Views.

http://www.vintageviews.com/

Vintage views is a wine rack system - in a variety of offerings from simple wall rack to complex cellar.  It is basic in design - two metal bars which hold the bottle in place but on it's side, so the entire bottle is viewed by the onlooker, not just the cork.  This enables you to find your favorite vintage in a moments notice as well as offering a beautiful piece of artwork to admire.

Vintage Views constructs wall mounted racks, free standing and custom racking.  In addition, your wine rack can hold 9 or 12 bottles in a single row, double roll or triple roll.  In other words, racks to hold anywhere from 9 - 36 bottles of your favorite wine.

I then found Cellar 1855, a business based in Edmonton that offered home consultations, drafted design plans, imported and installed vintage view racks!  I decided to start small and installed one 12-bottle rack in our dining room, and filled the rack with some Chianti Classico Reserva.  It was a well-received gift.  My initial idea of building a wine wall of about 48 bottles to view went to the back burner when I could not find a millwright to frame them in.  I guess all worked out for the best, because hubby did not want our collection in a warm room!  I think he has dreams of building his own cellar in the depths of the basement!

I saw this in the window and couldn't resist....

Do you have this problem finding the perfect window dressing? I do. There seems to be a huge gap between the IKEA selection of drapery and custom-made, and I have both! Really, if you have odd sized or shaped windows in a main area of the home, break into the piggy bank and go custom - you will not be disappointed! But custom maybe just too hard on the wallet for the whole house.

Ikea has a great selection for my daughter's room, and I found some standardized length curtains at Urban Barn for our guest room.

My recent find has actually been re-discovering Restoration Hardware. Formally just in the US and very expensive to order from, they are now a stones throw away in Calgary! They have a large selection of beautiful drapery and classic, clean designed hardware. The best part: free samples! With a wide selection of colours and patterns, you too can find the perfect shade to match those green eyes :-)
